The Canon Guide about Camera Pixels

Buying a new Canon camera can be very confusing as there are so many terms that sound like a foreign language. In order to be able to make a good choice in your purchase of a Canon digital camera, you will need to know the meaning of some basic terms pixels, white balance, dpi and ppi. All these terms will in some ways affect the quality of the image that a Canon Digital camera will produce. In this guide, we will explain about what a pixel means and how it will determine the quality of the image.

The word pixel actually stands for the term PICTURE ELEMENT. All digital pictures taken by the Canon Digital camera are composed of pixels. They are, in reality, tiny squares with different colors mosaic together like a giant jigsaw puzzle to form a digital image. Although at a glance, this is not evident until you enlarge the digital image significantly. Only then will you be able to see the little squares of different colors and hues. The colors and hue of each pixel is represented by 3 numbers, one number for the red, green and blue color channel. These numbers each, ranges from 0 to 255. Taken all together, there are 16 million possible color combinations that can be represented by these 3 numbers.

Not only do we use pixel counts for displaying digital images, all camera manufacturers nowadays also uses pixel counts for grading the ability of their cameras to take quality images. For Canon, a pixel count between 5 to 10 megapixels is the norm for their range of cameras. What this means is that, a Canon digital camera can take a picture with 5 to 10 million pixels in the picture. Although a pixel count do not significantly affect the quality of images displayed on the monitor, they do matter very much when you decided to print the digital images. The more pixels there in a digital image, the sharper and better looking the printed image is.

When considering pixel counts as an indicator of picture quality, you also have to see the differences between "Effective Pixels" and "Total Pixels". When we talk about "Total Pixels", every pixel in an image is counted But in the final image, not all pixels are counted. The pixels at the edge of an image are normally disregarded. The term "Effective Pixels" is used to describe the remaining pixels after all the edge pixels are discounted.

If you use a Canon 5 megapixels camera, the quality of its 5" by 7" is of excellent quality. Printing larger pictures like 8" by 10" will result in lesser quality but is still of decent quality. Nevertheless, if you are printing 8" by 10" pictures as a norm, then it is better if you buy a 8 to 10 megapixels Canon Digital Camera. - 16039
