Do You Need a Pocket PC?

By Michael Erikson

There is nothing quite as frustrating as forgetting an appointment or finding yourself out on the go and needing to access your personal documents. It can be enough to make you want to pull your hair out. So what do you need to keep your hair?

To keep track of important meetings or other events, you need something more portable. There are many gadgets out there that have these capabilities and the pocket PC is really good when it comes to portability and functionality. It's sleek and suites a life on the go very well.

The pocket PC, or pocket personal computer, was an evolution in the making. It started out as a basic device about the size of a calculator and had the most basic of functions. Later models added the feature of being able to see one line of text, yet have since evolved into personal hand held assistants that can email, browse the internet, organize your daily events and files and even play multimedia games.

The pocket PC is by a more general term also referred to as a PDA or Personal Digital Assistant. The previous versions ran on Windows Mobile 5, but have since upgraded to Windows Mobile 6. Windows Mobile 5 was a great relief to PDA owners.

When the version 6 came with even more advanced functionality, that e.g enabled the handheld device to work as a phone, also known as Smartphone. On top of that it added more disk space. The PDA was working like a full fledged mini-PC. And to eliminate the risk of losing data when the battery ran dead, Windows Mobile 5 started to use a flash memory to store information.

The Windows mobile Smartphone is a combination of the cell phone and the personal digital assistant. It's also the new upcomer that's getting the mainstream's attention. The PC software is there in the cell phone so it can be used as a personal computer when on the go, that's something we take for granted today.

The pocket PC is a great tool to have if you find yourself away from your home computer or office. It is an excellent way to stay in touch. There are some great models on the market today, such as the PalmOs, iPhone, Blackberry and many of the Hewlett Packard brands of smart phones.

Even if you already have a cell phone, the PDA can still be used for its scheduling capabilities; however, once you have fully mastered the PDA, you'll never want to go back to a paper planner again. - 16039
