It's not just a Gaming Console - Playstation 3

By Matt Ryan

Sony has provided consumers, for years, with phenomenal gaming environments. They have taken a step further with the Playstation 3. This gaming console offers a multi-media functionality, along with gaming technology that is still new to the market. Gaming and home entertainment has a new shell - the Playstation 3.

The Playstation 3, like other gaming consoles, comes with a variety of hard drive sizes. The bigger the drive, the more functionality the unit has. Offering different consoles gives consumers the ability to choose how much they want to spend and what exactly they want with their console.

The 80GB console supports some PS2 games, while the 60GB console supports the majority of the older games. If you have old PS2 games that you would like to play on your new PS3, you will need to get the one that supports the most games. (The 60GB has been discontinued, but there are other options available.)

You can connect your new PS3, to your home network, via Ethernet or Wi-Fi. In addition to an Ethernet port, the PS3 also has an HDMI output, SPDIF, and Playstations AV output (for analog audio and video).

The design, of the PS3, is definitely eye catching. It is only 12.8 x 3.8 x 10.8-inches in diameter, and weighs only 11 pounds. It has a shiny black casing, with chrome accents. Along the front of the box is a front-loading optical drive. Simply slide in your game, DVD, or Blue-ray disk, and you entertainment begins. The PS3 is a nice addition to any home theatre system.

The front of the box has a hidden compartment. In this compartment, you will find slots for CompactFlash, SD Memory Card and Memory Stick Duo card slots. Additionally, also on the front of the console, are four USB ports. These USB ports are for your convenience as you can plug in any USB device.

You only get one controller with the console. However, they are now wireless! Simply plug the controllers into one of the USB ports for charging. This is the only time you will need to have obtrusive cords protruding out of the front of the PS3.

Not only did Sony make their controllers wireless, but they also implemented motion sensitivity technology. The controllers can detect six different motions: forward, backward, left, right, up, and down. Different movements will perform different actions, which is dependent upon the game that you are playing. (An added bonus, the motion sensitivity can be turned off if you do not feel like messing with it.)

The console can also be used as a multi-media device. Image, audio, and video files can be stored and played directly from the PS3. Whether you want to put together a slideshow of your family reunion, listen to your favorite music, or relax in front of latest action flick - that can all be done with the new PS3.

PS3 consoles can be found ranging anywhere from $300 to $500; all dependent on the size hard drive you are looking for. Regardless of price, the PS3 offers you a whole new world of entertainment. From movies, to games, to online communities - it is the console of today. - 16039
